MacGyver Tip: Silence your laptop with snipped headphones

lappie-silencer1.jpg

You’re in a quiet place – like the library, or an overnight flight where everyone’s asleep – and you want to boot up the laptop without making a racket. Forget about turning off the volume in time; just repurpose those old crappy earphones into a laptop silencer. Reader estherbester explains:

When my last pair of earphones died, I cut the cord and tossed the dead earphones, but kept the part that plugs in. I just plug it into my laptop’s headphone jack before I turn on my machine when I’m at the library, and don’t have to worry about having set the ‘mute’ button or whatever.

Great way to put those throwaway freebie airline headphones to good use. Thanks, estherbester!

Just do it

So, in the files of “Great Ideas That I Shoulda Acted On Yesterday”, is Let’s Play Cafe.

A couple of weeks ago, I was sitting at work talking to my friends Zac and Brian about how the idea of the arcade has more or less disappeared into the eighties, and how a modern-day arcade for the multi-platform gaming audience would really do well around here. We kicked around all sorts of ideas, and eventually settled that a restaurant-type setting, with xboxes, wiis, playstations, and PC’s all hooked up to a TV that is networked to other stations. We would charge by the hour–a reasonable price–and also provide drinks and snacks. We even decided where it would go… in an empty space in a nearby mall that would be perfect for such a thing. Smiling at our own cleverness, we turned back to our work and didn’t think about it anymore.

Well, yesterday I go to the mall, and right where we talked about putting this thing was a restaurant called Let’s Play Cafe. And it was exactly what we had talked about before… with flatscreen TV’s–at least 50 of ‘em–with an xbox, wii, playstation, and PC hooked up to every last one. As I looked in at all the kids pouring money into these things, sipping Red Bull and looking very eager to spend, I tried to remember something that momma said once about seizing the day… but couldn’t.

*sigh*
